What is a Gamelan?
'Gamelan’ refers to a set of instruments which originate from the Indonesian island of Java and which consist largely of metallophones and gongs which are played with wooden mallets or beaters. The music produced by the Gamelan is based on everyone playing together but, at its simplest, requires no previous musical knowledge or skill.
It is meditative, simple and most importantly, great fun.
'We felt so lucky and privileged to have been given this rare opportunity to attend a Gamelan workshop. The experience turned out to be so much more than just an attempt to play the instrument'. Silver Programme participant, The Sage Gateshead
Gamelan at Work offers two workshop options:
Team building through hitting things
This is a half day workshop by the end of which your team will be playing an authentic Javanese piece of music in a relaxed and stress free environment. The emphasis in the workshop is on developing listening skills, cooperation and having a lot of fun.
Acting Out
Gamelan music is traditionally used to accompany shadow puppet plays which mostly depict great epic stories.
Using shadow puppetry and drama as creative facilitation techniques, issues relevant to your team can be explored and played out by the participants.
This process can be achieved in a full day workshop or through a series of sessions tailored to your needs.
