Aims and Objectives of Personal & Team Development Courses
(Youth Work, age group 11-24)
"Development" with BECKs Training aims at several things at once:
Increasing self esteem and confidence of individuals.
Understanding and accepting roles and responsibilities.
Awareness of own action and their consequences.
Building on the ability to adapt and solve problems.
Turn loners slowly into capable team players.
Gaining knowledge of own strengths and weaknesses.
Bonding as a team of people pursuing a common goal.
Increasing team morale and spirits for future work together.

"Expectations” from BECKs Training towards all Young People, Volunteers & Staff:
- Listen to health and safety briefings. If you do not understand details, you are expected to ask for clarification.
- Respect the venue and environment where the activity takes places, e.g. conservation of nature, respect wild life, take all waste off site.
- Respect and treat all equipment with care, such as helmets and harnesses, ropes, paddles, buoyancy aids, waterproofs, rucksacks etc.
- Respect any instructions given by BECKs staff regarding the content of activities and any health & safety issues.
- Wear the protective equipment according to instructions from BECKs staff, until activity is finished or a safe area is designated.
- Refrain from smoking during activities.
- Actively partake in activities as well as supporting team members and other participants.
- Wear appropriate clothing, footwear and weather protection according to relevant weather conditions and forecast.

Challenging Behaviour during Activities
When working with challenging young people, BECKs staff has the right to cancel any activity, if the young people:
- Are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Show inappropriate behaviour, such as foul and abusive language towards staff and general public.
- Bully other group members.
- Disrespect equipment and resources.
- Show violent behaviour to others, including staff and public.
- “Horseplay” during adventurous activities.
- Are caught stealing.
In the event of any of these situations arising, BECKs staff will consult the youth project staff, and a joint decision will be made on appropriate actions taken. As safety is our priority at all times, BECKs staff will have the final word in whether or not it is safe to continue with an activity.

Expectations towards youth project staff:
BECKs Training has a policy of joint responsibility during outdoor or any other activities facilitated by our company.
Whilst BECKs staff is fully responsible for all technical aspects of a session, youth project staff are asked to take joint responsibility for the group management side of any session. This includes:
- Asking young people to listen to any instructions/briefs
- Reinforcing all of the above “expectations”, e.g. language
- Supervising any young people who are not taking part
- Encouraging young people during activities
- Taking part in the activities where possible (role model)

Residentials at Deneholme:
We welcome young people of all ages, all backgrounds and all abilities at Deneholme. As a venue, we are often told, Deneholme is the most comfortable, homely, luxurious and friendly place many young people from more disadvantaged backgrounds have ever stayed. We are precious about this venue and like it to be kept beautiful and undamaged, but curiously we foudn that young people really respect this place and we never in three years had any serious case of damage to report.
